DESCRIPTION

HERBERT LIST (Hamburg, Germany, 1903 – Munich, Germany, 1975)
“Marina Piccola, Capri, Italy,” 1935.
Black-and-white photograph.
Posthumous print from the Herbert List Estate / Magnum Photos.
Signed on the print by the Herbert List Estate.
With Magnum stamp on the reverse.
Measurements: 15 x 15 cm.

In “Marina Piccola, Capri, Italy,” Herbert List distills much of his Mediterranean imagery: the male form, the white light of the south, the simple architecture of the boat, and the sea horizon transformed into an almost mythical setting. The figure, seen from behind, takes on a sculptural presence, close to the classical ideal, yet integrated into a quiet, everyday scene.

The composition avoids the anecdotal and focuses on the balance between body, landscape, and object. The boat, situated on the left, acts as a dark counterpoint to the young man’s illuminated skin, while the sea and the cliffs of Capri open up the image to a suspended atmosphere, somewhere between a travel document and a poetic vision.

The photograph belongs to List’s most recognizable body of work, marked by a classicist sensibility, a veiled homoerotic gaze, and a deep fascination with the Mediterranean. On the reverse side is a reference to Stephen Spender’s text on the photographer, in which he highlighted the almost spontaneous quality of his images, as if the camera had captured a moment just before it fully became a photograph.

Herbert List was a German photographer associated with Magnum Photos, known for his surrealist-inspired images, his portraits, and his travels through Greece, Italy, and the Mediterranean. His work combines compositional rigor, lyricism, and an intense connection to the classical world. His photographs are part of collections such as those at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
