PIERO POMPILI (Rome, 1967)
“The Triad,” 2022.
Black-and-white photograph.
Certified, signed, and stamped on the back.
Measurements: 24 x 18 cm.
In “The Triad,” Piero Pompili transforms a seemingly everyday moment into an image of powerful narrative intensity, somewhere between a documentary, a portrait, and a staged scene.
The photograph is part of Pompili’s most recognizable visual universe: male bodies, working-class settings, a close look at the world of boxing, and an almost sculptural interpretation of the human figure. Black-and-white here functions not merely as an aesthetic device, but as a means of focusing the image on light, gesture, and the emotional depth of the portrait.
The triangular composition—with the central figure seated and the two on either side leaning toward him—reinforces the title of the work and lends the scene an almost ritualistic dimension.
Piero Pompili is an Italian photographer born in Rome in 1967. His work focuses on portraiture, the human body, and urban fringes, with a particular focus on the world of boxing and the working-class neighborhoods of Rome and Naples. He has been published in magazines such as L’Uomo Vogue, L’Espresso, D la Repubblica, and Il Venerdì di Repubblica, and his work has been exhibited at institutions such as the MART in Rovereto, where he presented the exhibition “Pugili” in 2023.
