Created in 2006, “Paper Shed” belongs to a phase in Wolfgang Tillmans’s work during which the artist pushed the boundaries of traditional photography, exploring the physical qualities of paper, light, and color. Although the image is based on an everyday subject, the composition transcends its descriptive nature to become a study of form, volume, and visual perception. The work is part of the artist’s research during the first decade of the 21st century into the possibilities of the photographic medium, questioning the boundary between representation and abstraction. In this series, photography ceases to be merely a record of reality and becomes a space for visual experimentation where matter, light, and the medium itself take center stage.
Considered one of the most influential photographers of his generation, Wolfgang Tillmans was the first non-British artist and the first photographer to receive the Turner Prize, in 2000. He later studied at the Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design and lived in cities such as London and New York.
Tillmans has combined his artistic practice with teaching and cultural management. He has taught at various European institutions and, in 2006, founded Between Bridges, a non-profit exhibition space focused on political and socially engaged art, with locations in both London and Berlin. His work is part of the collections of institutions such as the Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. His work has transformed the contemporary conception of photography by combining documentary images, portraits, still lifes, and abstract compositions within a single visual language.
