DESCRIPTION
Russian icon, 19th century.
“Christ Pantocrator.”
Tempera on panel, with embossed and engraved silver-plated metal oklad.
Presented in a wooden display case with double doors.
The oklad shows signs of oxidation, wear, and loss; the painting exhibits craquelure and loss of polychromy. Wear and minor damage to the wooden structure.
Measurements: 29 × 25 × 6.5 cm.
Christ is depicted facing forward, blessing with his right hand and holding the Book of the Gospels in his left, in accordance with one of the central iconographies of the Orthodox tradition. The oklad, currently separated from the image, originally covered the background and the robes, leaving the painted face and hands visible. Its geometric ornamentation and embossed nimbus reinforced the icon’s sacred and sumptuous character.
