DESCRIPTION

Gala badge of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Zaragoza. Spain, XIX century.
In gilded silver and 14 kt. gold and polychrome vitreous enamel.
Embossed, chiseled and fire enameled.
Measurements: 8,50 cm (diameter).

This impressive piece corresponds to a gala badge of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Zaragoza, one of the oldest noble institutions in Spain. Made of gilded silver, with fire polychrome enamel applications and 14 kt. gold details, it represents a masterpiece of 19th century Spanish goldsmithery.

The piece is in the shape of a radiated eight-pointed star, with a textured background composed of silver beveled rays, on which is placed a central enameled medallion with the equestrian figure of St. George fighting the dragon, characteristic emblem of the corporation. The red circle surrounding it contains the Latin motto:

"EQUITES REGISTIS IN REGNUM ARAGONIAE", ("Knights of the King in the Kingdom of Aragon").

In the four inner corners are arranged the enameled coats of arms of the historical kingdoms and territories linked to the Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Catalonia, Majorca, Sardinia), each crowned with a closed royal crown.

The Royal Cavalry Macestranzas were founded between the 17th and 18th centuries to keep alive the equestrian and military tradition of the Spanish nobility. The one in Zaragoza, established in the 18th century and with strong ties to the Crown of Aragon, awarded this type of plaque to its members in solemn acts or as honorary distinctions.

This piece brings together not only a remarkable heraldic and symbolic value, but also a technical refinement characteristic of 19th century ceremonial jewelry. Its workmanship in noble metals and high quality enamels indicates that it was intended for a high-ranking gentleman within the institution.
