Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de Montesquieu, was an outstanding political thinker of the French Enlightenment, famous for having formulated the theory of the separation of powers, a fundamental pillar of modern constitutional systems. His thought is part of the critical enlightened spirit, committed to religious tolerance, freedom and a civil conception of happiness, although he maintained a certain distance from the purely empirical or deductive methods adopted by other contemporary authors. Close to the thought of John Locke and sensitive to the British political legacy, he developed his own original approach.
His intellectual career was consolidated with the publication of Persian Letters in 1721, an epistolary satire on French society that enjoyed great success. In 1748 appeared his most influential work, On the Spirit of the Laws, where he developed his political theory based on the classification of regimes and the need to divide power into executive, legislative and judicial. This work, influenced by his stay in England, aroused both admiration and rejection, being included in the index of books banned by the Church.
