BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Chess book of Alfonso X the Wise.
Limited facsimile edition, copy 1166/2000.
Vicent García Editores, 1987.
Dyed goatskin leather binding, with slipcase.
Measurements: 30,5 x 42 cm (each volume).
Facsimile edition of the 13th century Spanish miniature codex currently preserved in the Library of the Escorial Monastery. Co-published with Patrimonio Nacional and the publisher Luis Arana. Specially manufactured paper, aged, imitating vellum. Includes 150 miniature representations with gold leaf and full color.
The "Libro del axedrez dados et tablas", by Alfonso X the Wise, finished in 1283, one year before the king's death, was written on parchment and with a format of 28 x 40 cm. It consists of 200 folios (99 folios straight and turned exactly), written and miniated in color and gold leaf, with a profusion of representations. It contains 150 miniatures in good condition.
The present edition is the first complete edition, facsimile and in color, and is accompanied by a complementary volume containing historical, artistic and chess studies, as well as a complete transcription of the text, all by professors and academics of recognized prestige. This work appears as a monument of the symbolic hermetic literature of the time, becoming through the game the authentic transmitter of the knowledge that travels from the Far East and is gradually lost in each transmission.
A brilliant and unique work in its genre and in the history of chess, finished seven hundred years ago, it introduces the game of chess in Europe and confers it the corresponding rank of a game of kings and of noble and intelligent people.
