Rafael Alberti is one of the essential figures of the Generation of 27 and one of the most versatile poets of Spanish literature of the twentieth century. His work is characterized by the continuous exploration of new expressive forms, the dialogue between tradition and avant-garde and a marked plastic and musical sensibility.
Cal y canto, published in 1929 by Revista de Occidente in Madrid, is one of the most representative works of his first poetic stage. This book marks a transitional moment in Alberti's career, in which the neo-popular impulse of Marinero en tierra gives way to a more complex aesthetic, influenced by the European avant-garde and by greater formal experimentation.
The work is built from a constant tension between the classic and the modern, between the Spanish poetic tradition and the languages of rupture of the historical moment. In Cal y canto, Alberti incorporates urban rhythms, cinematographic images and resources close to ultraism and incipient surrealism, without completely abandoning the musicality and lyrical pulse characteristic of his writing.
From the thematic point of view, the book reflects a sensibility marked by modernity, the transformation of everyday experience and the fragmented perception of the contemporary world. This gaze is expressed through a poetry of great formal dynamism, in which the image acquires a central role as a structuring element of the poetic discourse.
The publication in the Revista de Occidente places the volume in one of the most relevant cultural contexts of interwar Spain, linked to the intellectual renewal promoted by José Ortega y Gasset. This editorial framework contributes to reinforce the importance of the book within the literary panorama of the time.
As a whole, Cal y canto represents a fundamental stage in the evolution of Rafael Alberti, consolidating his transition towards a more experimental and avant-garde poetry, and constitutes a key piece to understand the aesthetic development of the Generation of '27.
