One of the fundamental works of Spain’s legal and cultural history. The Seven Partidas, attributed to Alfonso X the Wise, constitute the major body of medieval Castilian legislation and one of the most influential legal texts in the Hispanic world.Drafted in the 13th century during the reign of Alfonso X, the Partidas are not limited to compiling legal provisions. Their content covers subjects as diverse as civil and criminal law, the organization of the Church, marriage, succession, commerce, the status of individuals, the administration of justice, and the authority of the king. The collection thus offers an extraordinary overview of the society, institutions, and political and legal concepts of medieval Castile.
Its influence extended far beyond the borders of the Crown of Castile. The Partidas became one of the main vehicles for the dissemination of Castilian law and exerted a lasting influence on the American territories and the Hispanic legal tradition, remaining relevant even in periods following the Middle Ages.
Of particular importance in this copy is the gloss by Gregorio López, a jurist and member of the Council of the Indies, whose interpretation of the Partidas was first published in Salamanca in 1555. The edition annotated by López attained extraordinary authority and was officially recognized as a reference text, to the extent that the 1555 edition was subsequently regarded as the authentic text of the Partidas.
