Pair of Empire stools in mahogany wood with gilded bronze applications. The Empire language was developed in France at the end of the 18th century, even before the French Revolution. Thus, we will see already in those years, in the Directory and Consulate, furniture more severe in its forms, with emphasis on the archaeological aspect at the decorative level. However, the Directory and the Consulate are but the creation of the Empire style, transitional languages without a clear stylistic identification: the Directory can sometimes be confused with Louis XVI, and the Consulate with the Empire, and sometimes it can even be difficult to distinguish between Directory and Consulate. From 1800 onwards there will be a fully formed Empire style; its limits are not clearly defined, but it is generally considered that it does not last beyond 1815 at the French court (it does in peripheral centers and in other countries). At the time of Louis Philippe we can speak of a sub-classical style, a survival of the Empire style in furniture of lesser quality.
