French Art Deco folding screen, circa 1930, composed of four articulated oak wood leaves, each decorated with oil paint that forms a single continuous motif across the entire surface. The work presents an enveloping and rhythmic design, characteristic of the Art Deco taste for the synthesis between the functionality of the object and the visual richness of its finishes.
The pictorial design is structured in an ascending scheme that emphasizes the chromatic contrast: in the lower area, dark tones predominate and serve as a dense background from which emerge large stylized flowers, treated with a remarkable formal freedom. These flowers, executed with sure strokes and wide surfaces of color, are arranged in a composition that suggests movement and expansion, reinforcing the visual continuity between the panels.
Towards the upper part of the screen, the palette becomes progressively lighter with the incorporation of ochre, gold and creamy tones, generating an effect of visual lightening that suggests a luminous and ethereal atmosphere. This gradual treatment of color, together with the floral design, evokes an idealized and ornamental nature, in tune with the decorative ideals of Art Deco, which sought to integrate applied and fine arts.
