DESCRIPTION
Side table-chess board, first half of the twentieth century.
In wood and marble.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use.
Measurements: 62 x 87 x 87 cm (table); 30 cm (height of main piece).
Auxiliary table with marble top to function as a chessboard. The figures represent characters of a medieval court. The pawns are pages. The towers imitate castle towers with battlements. King, Queen and Bishops are stylized human figures with long robes and distinctive crowns or headdresses. A quality detail is that they are complete equestrian figures (rider on horse), not just the head of the animal as is usual in simpler games. The natural contrast of the wood is used to differentiate the sides: one side in light wood (possibly boxwood) and the other in dark wood (walnut).
The four legs are made of turned wood, with balustrade shapes that give it a traditional Castilian style.
