DESCRIPTION
Console, following the eighteenth century; Italy, c. 1900.
Polychrome pine wood and marble top.
The board is from a later period.
Measurements: 85 x 155 x 68 cm.
This console stands out for its careful reinterpretation of the neoclassical language. The marble top, the garlands, the rosettes and the fluted legs evoke in a precise way the ornamental repertoire of the Louis XVI taste and the late baroque European classicism.
These neoclassical recreations of furniture arose in response to the renewed interest in antiquity and "pure" forms as opposed to the eclectic exuberance of the 19th century. For the well-to-do bourgeoisie, furniture such as this console table functioned as signs of cultural distinction.
The piece is particularly attractive for the quality of its carving, the presence of the original marble and stylistic fidelity. Its design, together with its Italian manufacture, makes it a piece with excellent potential in the furniture market.
