DESCRIPTION

Bureau-Cabinet; Italy, 20th century.
Coniferous wood, walnut root veneer, brass mounts, gilded wood finials.
Measurements: 276 x 163 x 68 cm.

The typology of the furniture responds to the combination between bureau or desk and upper cabinet-closet, a common formula in European furniture of the eighteenth century intended both for storage and writing work. In the lower part there is a chest of drawers with a wavy front, a typical feature of the Italian baroque tradition, which supports a folding or work surface. Above it rises the architectural elevation of the piece of furniture, articulated by mirrored doors and side compartments, designed to store documents, small objects or desk items.

The upper body presents a scenographic structure marked by curved and trimmed profiles, crowned by a decorative crest with gilded elements, vases and figures. This type of finial is reminiscent of the dynamic pediments of the late Baroque and is in keeping with the tendency of Italian cabinetmaking to conceive furniture as an extension of the architectural language. The metallic applications and gilded details also contribute to create hallmarks of light against the dark surface of the walnut root, underlining the sumptuous character of the whole.

Pieces of this type were intended for private cabinets, studies or representative rooms in palaces and noble residences. In addition to its practical function as a desk and container, the Bureau cabinet functioned as a sign of social status, reflecting the taste for elaborate cabinetry that characterized the European courts and elites of the 18th century.
