DESCRIPTION
Pair of chairs and stool. France, early 20th century.
"Retour d'Egypte".
Polychrome wood and cream upholstered.
Measurements: 87 x 42 x 49 cm.
Singular set formed by two chairs and a matching stool, executed in the spirit of the "Retour d'Egypte" style, an ornamental current born in the heat of the Napoleonic campaign in Egypt in 1798 and that experienced a remarkable revival in France during the change from the 19th to the 20th century, encouraged by the growing archaeological interest and the popular success of Egyptology.
The three pieces share a unitary decorative program. The legs, topped with small scrolls or papyrus feet, are decorated with motifs taken directly from the Ancient Egyptian repertoire on an ivory background. The crossbars and crosspieces that join the legs have the same painted decoration, creating a continuous ornamental surface. The chairs have a backrest with a curved profile in an upper scroll, upholstered next to the seat in a cream-toned striated fabric.
