DESCRIPTION
ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, 1846 - Nancy, 1904).
Side table. France, ca. 1900.
Walnut wood and fruit woods with marquetry decoration.
Signed.
In good overall condition commensurate with its age.
Measurements: 75 x 65 x 42 cm.
Elegant side table with sinuous lines, representative of the French Art Nouveau taste, made of walnut and fruit wood and enriched with a careful marquetry decoration. The top presents a naturalistic scene with a feline reclining among vegetation, resolved through a delicate play of tones and veins that give depth and pictorial character to the whole.
The stylized legs and ornamental cutouts reinforce the sensation of lightness and fluidity typical of the style, while the lower shelf repeats the curvilinear treatment, bringing coherence to the design.
Pieces like this reflect the ideas of Émile Gallé, a key figure of Art Nouveau, where nature becomes a source of inspiration and marquetry reaches a high degree of technical and aesthetic refinement.
Émile Gallé was one of the great renovators of the decorative arts at the end of the 19th century and a key figure of the École de Nancy. His work, which encompasses glass, ceramics and furniture, is represented in institutions such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
