BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Ark; Mexico, late 17th - early 18th century.
Tortoiseshell and silver.
Measurements: 21 x 37,5 x 17,5 cm.
The piece is part of the tradition of Mexican viceregal art, where European influences, especially Baroque, converge with local contributions. The undulating vegetal motifs and decorative horror vacui are distinctive features of this language, which tends to cover the entire surface with ornamentation. This decorative richness reflects the Baroque taste for the complex, the dynamic and the sumptuous, adapted to the American context through the use of exotic materials such as tortoiseshell.
These traits are evident in the work through its fully decorated surface, where the silver drawings unfold in sinuous forms that run continuously around the chest. The solid structure of the chest contrasts with the visual lightness of the ornamentation, generating a balance between functionality and beauty. The object, although utilitarian, thus becomes an artistic piece of great visual impact.
Contextually, this type of chest was highly valued in New Spain and formed part of both domestic furnishings and personal trousseaus. Their production reflects the development of specialized workshops and the circulation of models between Europe and America. As a whole, the work synthesizes the spirit of the Viceroyal Baroque: material wealth, technical virtuosity and a clear desire for ostentation, giving rise to an object that transcends its everyday use to become a symbol of prestige and sophistication.
