BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of sconces; MAISON BAGUÈS, France, 1930.
Glass and bronze.
Measurements: 48 x 29 x 12 cm (x2).
Pair of wall sconces that have the same design, with two points of light each. The pieces stand out for the work of the glass, being thus protagonist the figure of a bird that serves as structural axis for the lights that sit on gilded bronze bases.
The prestigious French lighting and decorative arts firm Maison Baguès has its origins in the 19th century, founded either in Paris in 1860 or in the Auvergne region around 1840. Still active today, the house continues to represent one of the finest expressions of French savoir-faire in the field of artistic metalwork and luxury lighting. Under the direction of Noël Baguès, master bronze craftsman and founder of the workshop, initial production focused on bronze liturgical candelabra for churches and religious spaces.
At the end of the 19th century, the incorporation of Eugène Baguès to the management of Maison Baguès prompted the transformation of the workshop towards the production of luminaires adapted to the new electric lighting, combining technical innovation and craftsmanship excellence. During the first decades of the 20th century, the firm, later directed together with Victor and Robert Baguès, consolidated its international prestige with designs influenced by Art Deco. In the 1920s it achieved great recognition thanks to its sophisticated gilded iron and crystal chandeliers, as well as sconces, furniture and decorative elements destined for luxury Parisian interiors. The quality of its metalwork attracted prominent decorators such as Armand-Albert Rateau, Raymond Subes and Maison Jansen, a collaboration that explains why many pieces of Maison Baguès appear today attributed or related to the latter firm.
