DESCRIPTION
Side table; France, Napoleon III, third quarter of the nineteenth century.
Ebonized wood, stained wood marquetry and bronze.
Measurements: 76 x 136 x 80 cm.
The piece reflects the eclectic and luxurious taste promoted during the reign of Napoleon III, a period in which the decorative arts reached a remarkable technical and ornamental development thanks to the rise of the bourgeoisie and the revitalization of the great Parisian workshops. From a formal point of view, the table combines a structure of great elegance with an exuberant decoration inspired by 18th century French models, especially in the Louis XV and Louis XVI traditions reinterpreted with a historicist sensibility. The oval tabletop features intricate marquetry with vegetal motifs, scrolls and symmetrical compositions executed in different shades of stained wood, creating a sophisticated pictorial and ornamental effect. The ebonized wood adds chromatic depth and contrasts with the golden richness of the applied bronzes, whose molded profiles and decorative details underline the sumptuous character of the piece.
The structure rests on turned legs joined by curvilinear crosspieces that converge in a central ornamental element of classical inspiration, reinforcing both the stability and the visual balance of the whole. This type of furniture was primarily intended for bourgeois and aristocratic interiors, where it fulfilled a dual practical and representative function. Beyond its usefulness as a support or salon table, these pieces acted as visible manifestations of social prestige, cosmopolitan taste and cultural sophistication.
