The important showcases that are now being auctioned, which are a magnificent example of French eclectic luxury of the Second Empire, were made by Henri-Auguste Fourdinois, one of the most outstanding Parisian cabinetmakers of the 19th century. These refined pieces are distinguished by a sophisticated reinterpretation of historical styles, resolved with great technical and ornamental quality. Both have a Louis XVI-inspired structure, with straight lines and a marked architectural composition, enriched with gilded bronze caryatids in the corners, of clear neo-Renaissance and classical influence, modeled with exceptional sculptural quality. To this is added an exquisite decoration of finely chiseled bronzes with garlands, scrolls, leaves and floral motifs, completed by a delicate marquetry of great aesthetic richness that evidences the extraordinary savoir-faire of the Fourdinois workshop.
The uniqueness of this piece lies, first of all, in the fact that it is a clear example of the characteristic stylistic syncretism of Fourdinois, who did not limit himself to faithfully reproducing antique models, but reinterpreted and combined with great sophistication references from the Renaissance, Louis XIV and Louis XVI, giving rise to furniture of marked theatricality and deep aristocratic character. It also perfectly represents the so-called grand goût of the French aristocracy and of the great European collectors of the 19th century, fascinated by this type of sumptuous furniture, a circumstance that led Fourdinois to place himself at the level of other great Parisian historicist workshops such as Beurdeley, Dasson or Grohé.
Of special relevance is the extraordinary technical and artistic level reached by Fourdinois, fully visible in these showcases, where impeccably executed marquetry, refined gilded bronzes finely chiseled with almost sculptural quality, delicate carvings and a composition of great architectural balance stand out. The caryatids transcend their ornamental function to become authentic sculptural figures of classical inspiration, while the sophisticated combination of noble woods, marble, curved glass, gilding and textile interiors reveals the intervention of numerous specialized trades of 19th century Parisian high craftsmanship, reserved only for the most exclusive and sumptuous furniture creations.
Auguste Fourdinois was a prestigious 19th century French cabinetmaker and furniture designer, heir to the famous maison Fourdinois in Paris, which specialized in luxury furniture for the aristocracy and the gentry during the Second Empire and the Belle Époque. Renowned for his extraordinary craftsmanship, he excelled in creating historicist pieces inspired by Louis XV, Louis XVI and Renaissance styles, using fine woods, refined marquetry, elaborate carvings and gilded bronzes. His firm achieved international fame thanks to the Universal Exhibitions, especially the Paris Exhibition of 1867, and today his works are highly valued in the antiques market and high-end French furniture collections.
