DESCRIPTION
Important Napoleon III column. France, ca. 1870-1880.
Onyx, gilt bronze and cloisonné enamel.
Architectural shaft with four columns, Corinthian capitals in gilded bronze and enameled decoration.
Measurements: 112 x 44 x 44 cm.
Important French column of the XIX century, made of onyx, gilded bronze and cloisonné enamel. The piece represents the taste for the decorative luxury of the last third of the 19th century, in a context marked by eclecticism, historicism and the fascination for the precious materials, typical of the Second Empire and the beginnings of the Third Republic.
The column stands on a stepped octagonal base, made of a visually rich onyx, with veins in shades of honey, amber, cream and ochre. Its structure does not respond to the model of a single shaft, but to an architectural composition formed by several stylized columns surrounding a central axis, a solution that brings lightness, rhythm and an almost palatial presence to the whole.
Special mention should be made of the quality of the gilded bronzes, fundamental in the reading of the work. The Corinthian capitals, bases, moldings and finials show a careful casting and chiseling work, visible in the treatment of acanthus leaves, scrolls and ornamental details. The bronze does not act here as a mere decorative complement, but as a structural and noble element, capable of ordering the architecture of the piece and enhancing the sumptuousness of the onyx.
The decoration is completed with delicate applications of cloisonné enamel, of oriental inspiration, with geometric and floral motifs in blue, turquoise and reddish tones. These details introduce a jewel-like chromaticism and a refined contrast of textures between the polished stone, the shine of the gold and the enameled surface.
Because of its material richness, technical complexity and careful architecture, this column is an exceptional piece of furniture, conceived for a representative interior. The piece retains its decorative strength and the attractiveness of its materials. Its sculptural presence allows it to be integrated into both classic interiors and high-end contemporary spaces, where it functions as an accent piece of extraordinary character.
