DESCRIPTION

Baroque chest of the 17th century.
Carved walnut wood.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use. With missing wood on the base.
Measurements: 80 x 194 x 58 cm.

This carved wooden chest, probably from the XVI or XVII century, presents a rectangular structure of great robustness and a rich decoration in relief typical of the Hispanic furniture of transition between the Renaissance and the first Baroque. The front is organized in carved panels with equestrian scenes of chivalrous or military character, in which armed horsemen ride through a landscape with castles and heraldic elements, highlighting in the center a noble coat of arms flanked by ornamental figures. The corners are decorated with turned columns, while the sides show stylized vegetal motifs framed by moldings. The wrought iron lock occupies a central position on the front lid, underlining its function as a custodian of valuable goods. The lower part exhibits a geometric border of interlaced carved arches, which adds decorative rhythm to the whole. Its elaboration reflects a remarkable craftsmanship and a clear representative intention, combining functionality, social prestige and ornamental richness. The sides are decorated with relief carved panels of symmetrical composition, in which stylized vegetal motifs stand out, reminiscent of leaves or open flowers arranged around a central axis. These panels are framed by geometric moldings and flanked by turned columns with a balustrade profile located at the corners, an ornamental resource very characteristic of Renaissance and early Baroque furniture. The carving, although less narrative than that of the front, brings visual richness and balance to the whole, reinforcing the noble and representative character of the piece through a careful ornamentation of high quality craftsmanship.
