DESCRIPTION
Pair of chairs, following Renaissance models; Northern Italy, XIX century.
Carved wood.
Measurements: 127 x 43 x 45 cm (x2).
This pair of chairs, made in Northern Italy during the 19th century following Renaissance models, is a magnificent example of the historicist taste that characterized much of the European decorative arts of the time. Carved in dark wood with extraordinary ornamental richness, the pieces reinterpret the formal repertoire of the Italian Renaissance through an exuberant sculptural decoration of Mannerist and Baroque inspiration.
The backrests present a complex architectural composition populated with fantastic figures, masks, vegetal scrolls and heraldic coats of arms, elements that evoke the Italian court furniture of the 16th and 17th centuries. Particularly striking are the Atlantean figures that support the upper structure, an ornamental resource of strong theatricality that underlines the monumental character of the chairs. The carving, deep and meticulous, demonstrates a remarkable technical quality and a clear interest in recreating the decorative richness of antique furniture.
