The pedestal features an open wrought-iron structure composed of straight and twisted uprights that widen toward the base into four supports with plant-inspired profiles. The body incorporates openwork elements, suspended rings, scrollwork, and flowers modeled in relief. The combination of a geometric structure with organic floral ornamentation is fully in keeping with the Modernist style. The curvilinear stems supporting the top, the flowers with overlapping petals, and the medieval-inspired motifs transform the functional framework into a composition of remarkable sculptural richness.

The piece is part of the holistic approach to interior design developed by Puig i Cadafalch, who designed architecture, furniture, lighting, and ornamental objects as an integrated whole. At Casa Amatller, renovated between 1898 and 1900, he specifically designed various pedestals intended to display Antoni Amatller’s glass collection, combining Modernist aesthetics with openwork and motifs inspired by the Gothic tradition.

Architect, interior designer, art historian, and politician, Josep Puig i Cadafalch was one of the leading figures of Catalan Modernism. Among his most iconic buildings are Casa Amatller, Casa Martí, and Casa de les Punxes. His work is characterized by the integration of the applied arts into cohesive decorative ensembles and by a personal reinterpretation of medieval motifs.
