A lady’s writing desk with a dressing table, crafted from ebonized wood and embellished with bronze inlays. The rectangular body rests on four fluted legs joined by a curved molding. The waist section, which includes a drawer, features gallant scenes painted on porcelain, while the top panel incorporates an interior composition framed by a blue background and gilded ornamentation.

The top is dominated by a tilting oval mirror, set between two column-like uprights. Its frame is decorated with porcelain plaques depicting female portraits, putti, flowers, and allegorical scenes, and is topped with garlands. The combination of the black wood, the gold of the bronze elements, and the polychromatic porcelain lends the piece a striking ornamental richness.

The piece reflects the historicism characteristic of the Napoleon III period, when 18th-century French styles were reinterpreted to satisfy the tastes of a bourgeois and aristocratic clientele. Its rectilinear structure, fluted legs, scrollwork, and medallions specifically reference the Louis XVI repertoire, which was revived with particular intensity from the mid-19th century onward.

The plaques, inspired by Sèvres porcelain, lend the piece a sumptuous character and link it to notable French designs in which porcelain is integrated into the cabinetry alongside gilded bronze. The Louvre Museum houses a Louis XVI-style bonheur-du-jour decorated with numerous Sèvres plaques, a significant precedent for this type of ornamentation.
