Catalan Modernist-style entryway sofa-bench, made of mahogany with pyrographed and polychromed panels, designed by Joan Busquets i Jané (1874–1949) and crafted around 1900.

The piece features an imposing architectural structure with a high backrest; its wooden frame houses side panels that are pyrographed and stained with stylized floral motifs of water lilies or sunflowers in the Art Nouveau style. The central panel, which serves as a padded backrest, and the seat are upholstered on the back, resting on curved armrests that slope downward to meet the legs in the lower third.

Joan Busquets i Jané established himself as one of the great cabinetmakers and interior designers of Modernism in Barcelona. This entryway bench design was part of one of his most successful and widely adopted series, originally conceived to coordinate with umbrella stands and planters to adorn the entryways of the Catalan upper class. The technique of polychrome pyrography featuring botanical motifs—highly characteristic of Casa Busquets’ production between 1898 and 1900—adds a new pictorial dimension to the piece.
