BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Drum desk; Netherlands, late 18th century.
Oak frame; fruitwood marquetry; gilded bronze.
The locks bear the signature: "J.T. Needs & Co. / Late J. Bramah," dating from the late 19th century.
Shows signs of wear and has some missing parts.
Measurements: 122 x 115 x 54 cm.

Three-section drum desk in oak, entirely decorated with rich fruitwood marquetry, forming motifs of floral bouquets, foliage, and garlands that run across all surfaces of the piece, both on the front and the sides, where large compositions of vases with flowers and birds are arranged. The upper section, topped by an openwork gallery of gilded bronze with small pinnacles at the corners, is closed by a curved shutter that, when slid open, reveals the interior of the writing desk: four small drawers arranged in pairs on either side of a central compartment, which is closed by a hinged door. In front is the writing surface, lined with dyed and embossed green leather. The lower section, which is larger, features three large drawers with bronze handles, also decorated with floral marquetry, and rests on pilaster legs, fluted at the base of the corners.

The current locks, made by the English firm “J.T. Needs & Co.”—the successor to Joseph Bramah’s company—were installed in the late 19th century, likely to replace the cabinet’s original locks. The piece has some damage, with cracks in various areas of the marquetry and visible wear on the leather of the writing surface.
