DESCRIPTION
Chest: France, late 19th century.
Gilded and chiseled bronze
Measurements: 9 x 25.5 x 15 cm.
This mercury-gilded bronze casket is a representative example of late 19th-century French decorative arts, from a period dominated by historicist taste and the technical virtuosity of Parisian bronze work. Rectangular in shape and well-proportioned, it features a lid decorated with a central oval cartouche framed by elaborate ornamentation of scrollwork and stylized plant motifs, arranged with remarkable symmetry. The sides continue this same decorative repertoire, where the metal surface has been worked with extremely fine chiseling that alternates areas of relief with softly shaded backgrounds, creating an effect of visual richness and depth. The piece rests on small, curvilinear legs, discreetly integrated into the structure and crafted with the same technical quality.
This type of chest reflects the eclectic taste of the era, in which Baroque and Rococo ornamental styles were reinterpreted through a bourgeois and decorative sensibility.
