The piece stands out for its sumptuous decoration and the quality of its materials. The body of the box is richly ornamented with gilded reliefs and rococo decorative elements, such as scrolls, winged cherubs in the corners and profusely carved legs in the form of leaves. On the lid stands an imposing silver lion figure, symbol of power and nobility. It has a silver plaque with a dedication in German. It can be read that this was a gift from the city of Marienbad to Julie Kopacsy for her participation in the festival held in honor of the Shah of Persia.
The finely enameled Limoges porcelain panels depict bucolic and gallant scenes in the late Rococo style, with elegantly dressed characters interacting in a pastoral landscape. These Limoges enamels were highly valued for their detail, chromatic richness and the technical mastery they represented.
This type of jewelry boxes were not only functional objects for storing precious pieces, but were also symbols of status and good taste, typical of the European high society of the Belle Époque. Their elaboration required the collaboration of multiple specialized craftsmen: bronze workers, silversmiths, porcelain painters, among others, which makes them true works of applied art.
In addition, jewelry boxes like this one reflect the artistic refinement of the time and the admiration for the decorative art of the 18th century, which was revived with great splendor in the 19th century.
