DESCRIPTION
Pair of document holders. France, Napoleon III period, third quarter of the nineteenth century.
Gilded and patinated bronze on rouge griotte marble base.
It has slight losses in the patina.
Measurements: 28 × 15 × 5 cm.
Pair of supports for documents of marked decorative character and utilitarian function, conceived at the height of the Second French Empire, under the influence of the ornamental historicism characteristic of the reign of Napoleon III. The structure, of architectural conception, presents a symmetrical design centered by a pair of fluted columns topped by synthetic capitals, ornamented in its central part with tulips. The columns are joined by a scalloped arch, formed by two exuberant horns of abundance that pour fruits and flowers, a classic symbol of fertility, very recurrent in the iconography of the period. In the keystone of the arch there is a delicately chiseled cherub mask, surrounded by scallops and a garland. The center of the arch is distinguished by a contrasting treatment in patinated bronze, on which are arranged several butterflies in relief, providing a delicate counterpoint to the gilded ensemble. The structure rests on a base of rouge griotte marble, a variety of red ornamental stone with white veins, much appreciated in 19th century luxury writing objects.
