Dish; Following Renaissance models, Hungary. c 1900.
Bronze.
Measurements: 5 x 40,5 cm.
This work in bronze, made in Hungary is part of the historicist taste of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, when the Central European workshops recovered with remarkable virtuosity the formal and narrative models of the Renaissance. Following this tradition, the piece adopts the circular format of the tondo, so characteristic of Renaissance sculpture and relief, conceived both for aesthetic contemplation and for moral or symbolic evocation.
The central relief represents a genre scene of narrative character, populated by figures dressed in historically inspired costumes, arranged in an open landscape. The composition is organized around a main character, of larger scale and presence, who articulates the action and establishes a visual axis in dialogue with the secondary figures, including a child and an animal, common elements in late Renaissance and Mannerist iconography. The modeling is careful and detailed, with a sensitive treatment of the folds of the garments and a clear spatial hierarchy through different relief planes.
