DESCRIPTION
Candlestick; Following Renaissance models; early nineteenth century.
Bronze.
Measurements: 18 x 9 cm.
Candlestick inspired by Renaissance models, framed within the historicist taste of the time. Conceived as a functional and at the same time ornamental object, the piece articulates its design by means of an axial and symmetrical composition that refers directly to the classic canons. The decorative repertoire is based on motifs of classic roots, treated with a marked and expressive relief. The lion's heads and stylized vegetal elements stand out, alternating symbolic and purely ornamental functions.
The technical quality of the work is evident in the precision of the modeling and the finish of the metal, which reveals a mastery of the casting process and the subsequent chiseling work. As a whole, the candlestick is fully inscribed in the artistic context of the first third of the 19th century, a time when the rediscovery of the classical and Renaissance past resulted in the creation of pieces that reinterpret, rather than faithfully reproduce, historical models.
