DESCRIPTION
Center in the form of "tazza".
Russia, XIX century.
Gilded bronze and malachite.
Measurements: 42 (height) x 24 cm (diameter).
The cup is made of malachite, a copper carbonate mineral that stands out for its intense green veined color. It was a material extremely appreciated in the decoration of high-end interiors during the 19th century, especially after the boom of its importation from the Urals (Russia). The lower structure is made of cast, chiseled and gilded bronze. The "gilded bronze" (bronze doré or ormolu) is a technique where an amalgam of gold and mercury was applied to the bronze to achieve that shiny and durable finish.
The central male figure holds the cup, acting as an Atlantean (the male version of a caryatid). His striving posture and the draping of the fabric suggest a reference to classical statuary, perhaps evoking the figure of Hercules or a heroic depiction, very common in this type of decorative furniture.
The piece follows the aesthetics of late Neoclassicism or the Empire Style. These centerpieces (center de table) were fundamental pieces in the dining rooms and aristocratic salons of the time, designed to exhibit status and refined taste. In addition to their aesthetic function, these objects were often used as centerpieces for fruit, flowers or simply as decorative elements on consoles or fireplaces.
