Representative piece of French historicism developed during the Second Empire, a period in which the decorative arts recovered with extraordinary sophistication the ornamental models of the eighteenth century. Made in patinated and gilded bronze, and later readapted as a lamp, the work evidences the technical refinement and decorative richness that characterized the Parisian production of the Napoleon III period, deeply marked by the reinterpretation of French royal styles.
Inspired by the formal repertoire of the Louis XVI style, the torchère combines architectural balance and ornamental exuberance. The fluted shaft and vertical lines recall the neoclassical language introduced in France during the reign of Louis XVI, while the base incorporates ram's masks, hanging garlands and vegetal elements of great sculptural plasticity. These motifs, taken from classical antiquity and reinterpreted through the French ornamental tradition, reflect the archaeological and monumental taste that dominated the sumptuary arts since the end of the 18th century and which was revitalized under Napoleon III.
