BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Two-light chandelier; France, c. 1800.
Mercury gilded bronze and patinated bronze.
Measurements: 59 x 28 x 14,5 cm.
This French two-light candelabra, made around 1800 in gilded mercury bronze and patinated bronze, is a refined example of the neoclassical bronze work developed during the Empire period. The piece presents a classical female figure, conceived as a caryatid, whose patinated surface contrasts elegantly with the brightness of the gilded bronze of the torches she holds with both hands. This chromatic interplay between the dark patina and the gilt intensifies the sculptural effect of the composition and evidences the technical sophistication achieved by the Parisian workshops of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The figure stands on a quadrangular base in the form of an obelisk, a typology directly inspired by classical antiquity and particularly appreciated in the Napoleonic ornamental language. The arms of light, conceived as cornucopias or stylized torches, refer to traditional symbols of abundance, knowledge and eternity, thus integrating functionality and iconography in the same decorative object. This type of candelabra was intended for aristocratic interiors, where the glow of the candles on the golden surfaces contributed to create solemn and theatrical atmospheres.
The design is closely related to models produced by some of the most famous French bronze artists of the time, such as Pierre-Philippe Thomire or Claude Galle, fundamental figures in the consolidation of the Empire style. Both workshops developed a production inspired by Greco-Roman and Egyptian archaeological repertoires, transforming lighting objects into authentic decorative sculptures. In this sense, the piece fully reflects the French neoclassical aesthetic, characterized by symmetry, restrained monumentality and an idealized reinterpretation of Antiquity.
