BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of frames following Neapolitan models of the eighteenth century; twentieth century.
Carved wood and tortoiseshell simile.
Measurements: 74,5 x 65,5 x 13 cm (x2); 44,5 x 34,5 cm (x2).
Pair of frames made in the 20th century following 18th century Neapolitan models, conceived as a historicist reinterpretation of the refined decorative typologies spread in the Italian Baroque workshops. Executed in carved wood and decorated with tortoiseshell applications, the frames stand out for the visual richness of their chromatic hallmarks and for the ornamental elegance derived from eighteenth-century Neapolitan models.
The structure combines black moldings on both the outer and inner perimeter, creating a marked effect of depth that frames and enhances the central surface decorated in imitation tortoiseshell. This resource, inspired by the luxurious 18th century Neapolitan frames made with precious materials and shell applications, responds to the baroque taste for shiny surfaces, material hallmarks and decorative richness. The warm, mottled tone of the faux tortoiseshell adds visual dynamism and a refined sense of sumptuousness, evoking the decorative arts associated with Italian furniture and cabinetmaking of the period.
The carving, discreet but effective, organizes the various moldings by means of staggered profiles and balanced linear rhythms that accentuate the architectural character of the whole.
This type of frame, inspired by Neapolitan repertoires of the 18th century, was especially appreciated in 20th century historicist productions for classical settings and decorative collections of traditional taste.
