DESCRIPTION
Portrait of Charles III. Spain, second half of the 18th century.
Carved and gilded wood.
Measurements: 28 x 22 cm; 66 x 45 x 12 cm.
Spanish Charles III-era frame in a fully Rococo style, characterized by exuberant openwork decoration featuring scrolls, acanthus leaves, and volutes of striking symmetry, topped at the top by a finial with a large stylized scallop shell and at the bottom by a centered floral motif. The inner molding features a delicate frieze of small gilded blocks or galloons that frames the opening, while the piece as a whole stands out for its ornamental dynamism and elegant lightness—characteristic features of Spanish cabinetmaking and carving during the reign of Charles III (1759–1788), where French Rococo influence is combined with greater regularity and compositional balance.
