BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

FRANCESC VIDAL I JEVELLÍ (Barcelona, 1848–1914).
Modernist mirror, ca. 1900.
Mahogany, gilded brass, and cloisonné glass inlay decoration.
Beveled mirror.
It has some missing small glass inlays and slight wear.
Measurements: 74 x 87 cm; 50.5 x 63 cm (mirror).

The mirror is framed by a wide rectangular border, composed of geometric bands and rich floral decoration. Flowers, leaves, and sinuous stems are concentrated particularly in the corners, from which they extend toward the sides in symmetrical, stylized patterns. Of particular note is the decoration featuring cloisonné glass granules. The reddish, green, violet, and golden tones stand out against the dark background, creating a surface of remarkable chromatic and textural richness. The gilded metal moldings that surround the central panel and outline the frame reinforce the piece’s refined character. The integration of cabinetmaking, metalwork, and glass arts reflects the unified conception of the decorative arts developed by Francesc Vidal.

Francesc Vidal i Jevellí was one of the great pioneers of Modernism and interior design in Catalonia. After training in Paris, he founded an innovative complex of workshops in Barcelona that brought together cabinetmakers, glassmakers, foundry workers, and designers. He worked for the Royal Household, the Marquis of Comillas, and prominent members of the bourgeoisie, and his workshops produced some of the furniture for the Palau Güell. His work is represented in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona.
