This portable writing desk exemplifies the fusion of Sinhalese cabinetmaking with European styles of travel furniture developed during the colonial period. Designed for civil servants, merchants, and travelers, these pieces adapted the Western form of the folding writing desk through the use of high-density local woods and inlay work. Workshops in southern Ceylon, particularly those later associated with the Galle district, gained particular renown for producing chests and writing desks intended both for the resident European clientele and for export.
The simplicity of the exterior—crafted from ebony and featuring fine longitudinal fluting—is a hallmark of the ornate richness of the interior. When opened, the piece reveals a slanted writing surface and an upper section organized into small drawers and compartments for writing implements. The bone inlays form borders of dots, rosettes, stars, and geometric patterns, highlighted by medallions with reddish details and by the dark background of the wood.
The preservation of the hinged mechanism, the interior compartments, and much of its decoration allows one to fully appreciate the piece’s dual nature: a portable work tool and a sumptuous object, representative of the refinement achieved by Ceylonese cabinetmaking intended for the international market.
