DESCRIPTION
“Lamentation over the Dead Christ.” France, 19th century.
Painted and polychrome enamel on copper, with gold highlights and raised enamel drops.
Gilded and silver-plated metal frame, with a rear support and heraldic finial.
Measurements: 29 × 21 cm.
The plaque draws on the tradition of Limoges painted enamels, which were particularly prized during the 19th century following the historicist revival of Renaissance models. It depicts the Lamentation: the Virgin and the holy women hold the body of Christ, accompanied by angelic figures, within a meticulously ornamented architectural setting. The intense polychromy, blue backgrounds, and gilded details reinforce the sumptuous and devotional character of the composition.
The elaborate frame combines scrollwork, pinecones, and floral motifs, crowned by an enameled heraldic emblem. Its hinged structure allows the piece to be displayed both as a small object of private devotion and as a decorative element inspired by the Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance styles.
