BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of corbels; Spain, 18th century.
Carved and gilded wood.
Measurements: 56 x 30 x 26 cm (x2).
Pair of wall corbels made of carved and gilded wood, designed both as architectural support elements and as pieces of outstanding ornamental value. Their design reflects the Spanish late Baroque style, characterized by exuberant decoration featuring intertwined plant motifs, rocaille, and large acanthus leaves in pronounced relief, creating an intense interplay of light and shadow that highlights the richness of the carving. The gilding, applied over a plaster base, enhances the dramatic effect of the surfaces and reflects the Baroque interest in sumptuousness and the integration of sculpture with architecture.
This type of corbel was common in palatial and religious interiors during the 18th century, where they served to support devotional images, busts, vases, or small objects of prestige, while visually enriching the facades through a highly refined decorative language. This pair retains the compositional balance and quality of craftsmanship characteristic of Spanish woodcarving from this period.
