The Olympic Suite consists of fifty lithographs and silkscreen prints selected to represent various contemporary artistic trends. It was published to commemorate the first centennial of the modern Olympic movement. The selected artists work in a wide variety of movements and styles, ranging from the hyperrealism of Antonio López to the abstraction of Sol Lewitt, including Abstract Expressionism, the geometric art of Arden Quin, Conceptual Art, Pop Art, the New Realism of Baldaccini and Rotella, and the New Fauvism of Dokoupil, among others. Among the artists represented are creators of great international renown, widely recognized by critics.
A watercolorist, printmaker, lithographer, and ceramicist, Yasse Tabuchi was drafted into military service during World War II at the age of just 17. In 1948, he returned to Tokyo, where he began studying art history, specializing in French painting. In 1951, Tabuchi traveled to Paris to continue his studies at the prestigious Sorbonne University, exhibiting at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, an association of Parisian artists focused on abstract art. The lyrical abstraction he developed in his works led him to achieve great success among postwar French society. Specifically, Tabuchi’s lyrical abstraction consists of a rejection of the representation of objective reality, as this allows the public to draw their own conclusions about the work. In 1958, Tabuchi participated in an exhibition of Japanese abstract art, gaining recognition in his home country. In 1985, he received a major award from the French government for his contribution to French cultural heritage.
