Mark Verstockt played an essential role in the Belgian post-war art scene. From the 1950s onwards, his work became part of the European New Tendencies and the ZERO movement, which became evident with Verstockt's inclusion in the "Monochrome Malerei" exhibition in Leverkusen, the first major manifestation of ZERO in 1960. In the mid-1960s, Verstockt achieved a geometric visual language that was a permanent motif in his work thereafter. He became a respected advocate of Minimal Art, with a preference for the square.
