Dechanet began his career as a master glassmaker, collaborating in the creation of stained glass for artists such as Matisse, Chagall and Jean Bazaine. After closing his workshop in 1959, he devoted himself entirely to painting. In 1977, he moved to Madrid and, from 1986, began working as a teacher at the School of Stained Glass in Cuenca. During the 1990s, Dechanet led the project of restoration and creation of the abstract stained glass windows of the Gothic Cathedral of the city. The designs for these stained glass windows were the work of Gustavo Torner, Bonifacio Alfonso, Gerardo Rueda and Henri Dechanet himself. In addition to his work in the Cathedral of Cuenca, he was also responsible for the restoration of the stained glass windows of the Cathedral of Toledo. From 1991, he devoted himself entirely to painting, living between Requena and Usez (France).
