Juan Batlle Planas was an outstanding surrealist painter born in 1911 in Catalonia, Spain, and settled in Argentina at a very young age. His artistic training began in a self-taught way, influenced by his uncle, the engraver José Planas Casas. Although he initially studied mechanics, he soon turned to art, attracted by the world of the unconscious and the symbolic.

His work developed within surrealism, but with a very personal approach. He explored themes such as dreams, the irrational and the psychoanalytical, using techniques such as graphic automatism. In 1936 he created one of his first important series, Radiografías paranoicas, and in 1939 he held his first solo exhibition in Buenos Aires.

Throughout his career, Batlle Planas received important awards, such as the Palanza Prize, and exhibited in national and international museums and galleries. His painting evolved from the symbolic to a more lyrical abstraction, but he always maintained a deep connection with the spiritual and philosophical.

He died in 1966 in Buenos Aires, leaving an artistic legacy that consecrates him as one of the great explorers of the unconscious in Argentine art.
