"Woman with Mandolin" combines the analytical structure of Cubism with a warm palette and a more humanized sensibility, reflecting Braque's post-war artistic maturity. In this post-World War II phase of his career, Braque revisits classic motifs from his oeuvre such as musicians, instruments, and female figures, exploring a more intimate and poetic vision of Cubism. The mandolin, in particular, is a recurring symbol representing the harmony between music and painting.
Georges Braque began his training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre. He then moved to Paris, where he continued his studies with a master decorator and at the Humbert Academy. He began his career as a Fauvism artist, but in the fall of 1907 the retrospective exhibition of Cézanne and his friendship with Picasso made him change his style. The work of both, in close relationship, will give rise and evolve Cubism. Georges Braque is represented at the MoMA, the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim in New York, the Orsay in Paris, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome, the Reina Sofia and the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London and the Kunstmuseum in Basel, among many others.
