Joan Hernández Pijuan was formed in Barcelona, in the Schools of La Lonja and Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, and completed his education in the School of Fine Arts of Paris. In 1981 he was appointed professor and later dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona. He began his career with an expressionism of social content, linked to the Sílex Group and the School of Barcelona, evolving in the seventies towards a geometric figuration and, later, towards a poetic and refined informalism.
His exhibition career was extensive and international, with shows in cities such as Zurich, Milan, New York, Paris and Osaka. In 2003 MACBA organized a large traveling retrospective in several European museums. His numerous awards include the National Prize for Plastic Arts (1981), the Sant Jordi Cross (1985) and the City of Barcelona Award (2004).
Hernández Pijuan's work is part of important national and international collections, including the MACBA, the Reina Sofía Museum, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, among others, consolidating him as one of the most relevant figures of contemporary Spanish art.
