Richard Serra is considered one of the most distinguished and well-known artists in the United States. Of Spanish father -Majorcan- and Ukrainian mother, Serra was born in San Francisco. He studied literature at the University of California at Berkeley and Santa Barbara (1957-1961). During his early years, he worked in a steel mill, an activity that influenced his artistic language. He then studied art at Yale University (1961-1964). Specializing in large-scale sculpture, as the years went by his fame and the size of his works grew. Gallerists like Leo Castelli or collectors like Emily and Joseph Pulitzer became interested in an art that, due to its volume, jumped from the galleries to the street, an aspect that introduced him to Land Art along with great artists like Oppenheim or Javacheff. Throughout his career he has received many awards and grants, including the prestigious Légion d'honneur of France, which was awarded to him in 2015, the Order of Arts and Letters of Barcelona and the 2010 Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. His work is currently in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid, the MACBA in Barcelona, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
