Sandra Ramos is an outstanding member of the so-called "Generation of the 90's". Trained at the Escuela 20 de Octubre, the Academia San Alejandro (1988) and the Instituto Superior de Arte (1993), she has developed a deeply personal visual language based on engraving -especially intaglio and woodcut-, a medium in which she is internationally recognized. Her work constructs a symbolic narrative on identity, memory and the Cuban socio-political reality, with a strong poetic and introspective dimension.
On this occasion, the image of the hand embracing a fish is of great formal sobriety and remarkable symbolic charge.
She is especially known for the creation of her alter ego, "la pionerita" (the little pioneer), a child figure inspired by Alicia that allows her to address issues such as migration, the loss of innocence and the tensions of the revolutionary imaginary, resorting to maps, the sea and national symbols. Although printmaking is central to his production, he has expanded his practice into installation and video, broadening the conceptual scope of his work. Present in collections such as MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the British Museum and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, he currently resides in the United States, where his work has incorporated new reflections on exile and biculturality.
