In Homme (1987), Jaume Plensa develops one of the fundamental lines of his artistic research: the human figure understood as interior territory and symbolic space. The male silhouette, of marked verticality, is constructed by means of dense and organic black strokes that run through the body as if it were an emotional cartography or an exposed nervous structure.
The combination of aquatint and carborundum makes it possible to obtain a surface of great material intensity. The monumentality of the format reinforces this physical dimension, anticipating concerns that Plensa would later develop in his three-dimensional production: the body as a container of memory, energy and language.
Jaume Plensa studied at the Llotja School and at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He lives in Paris and has developed an extensive international career, with outstanding exhibitions such as the retrospective held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in 2000.
He has received important recognitions, among them the National Prize of Plastic Arts of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Medal of Knight of Arts and Letters of the French Ministry of Culture. His work is part of important international collections and museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and the MACBA in Barcelona.
